I recall when I’d go down
the dock road on my way to town
and though a desk was work for me,
I dreamed instead to ‘go to sea’.
Each day I’d pass by Waterloo
Gladstone, Stanley, Nelson too;
Victoria, George, the Prince’s dock
all safe from tides beyond the lock.

Behind their walls were ships unseen
from places where I’d never been,
but now and then a bow or stern
or smoke from funnels I’d discern.
Sometimes a hull in faded white
with orange hues from rusted blight
and foreign crews with olive skin
emerge to see the day begin.
Then empty docks and empty roads
no queues of lorries filled with loads,
no need for bobbies at the gate
to give the nod to end their wait.
Just the wind, straight off the sea
blowing hard, as cold could be
that made the rubbish rise and fall
then come to rest beside the wall.
These docks were now a lonely place
and dark grey water filled the space
where ships had moored and been restrained
against the wall by ropes and chains.
The tide had turned, well past its height
the future now was not so bright,
the newer ships they never came
container docks in part to blame.
And fewer dockers than before
to haul the goods from ship to shore,
but at least they earned a weekly wage
and not just pay for casual days.
And where they and sailors used to meet
in noisy pubs along the street,
now boarded-up and left to rot
their bawdy tales would be forgot.
But some things stay for history
like granite stores once filled with tea
and cobble stones with metal track
where trains and trams went forth and back.
Then hopes would rise, as ships I’d see
with names from greek mythology;
home in port from trips abroad
to Lagos, Hong Kong, Singapore.
But these proud ships would likely be
the last of their great dynasty;
no empire now for trade to thrive,
hard to see these ships survive.
I realised then that life for me
was not to sail across the sea
to far-off lands as once I thought,
then sailing home to this great port.

I was born in Liverpool and wanted to ‘go to sea’ – but alas, it was not to be.
